Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 38-year-old, a key figure in Chennai Super Kings' two title wins (2010 and 2011), confirmed his decision via social media, expressing gratitude for his time in the league and excitement for new opportunities.
Ashwin's IPL career spanned 16 seasons, during which he represented five different franchises: Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings,
Beyond his on-field contributions, Ashwin made history in 2022 as the first batter to be tactically retired out in an IPL match. His innovative approach to the game and willingness to push boundaries have been hallmarks of his career.
Ashwin's retirement opens the door for him to participate in other T20 leagues around the world, something not permitted for active IPL players. He expressed his eagerness to explore these opportunities in his retirement announcement, hinting at a new chapter in his cricketing journey.
“Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today🤓. Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me”
