Star Indian batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have reportedly agreed to participate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, adhering to the mandate set by chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Agarkar had stressed that all centrally contracted players must feature in domestic cricket during long breaks between international assignments to maintain match fitness and remain eligible for national selection, particularly with an eye on the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Both players, who are set to feature in the ODI series against Australia, will utilize the five-week gap between the South Africa and New Zealand ODI series to represent their respective state teams, Delhi (Kohli) and Mumbai (Rohit). Reports suggest both veterans have confirmed their availability for at least three rounds of the 50-over domestic tournament, which begins on December 24.
This commitment marks a rare return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy for both players; Kohli last played in the tournament in 2010, and Rohit in 2018. Their participation sets a crucial example for younger cricketers and ensures the senior players remain match-ready as India prepares for future international challenges.
“Between the last ODI against South Africa on December 6 at Visakhapatnam and the first ODI against New Zealand at Vadodara on January 11, there is a gap of five weeks. "The Vijay Hazare Trophy starts on December 24... Rohit will be expected to at least play three rounds before linking up with the squad. Ditto for Virat,”
