Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has clarified that his decision to retire from international and IPL cricket was a deeply personal choice, putting an end to speculation that he was forced out by the team management. Ashwin confirmed that key figures within the Indian setup, including then-captain Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir, had actually advised him to reconsider his decision, indicating that his services were still valued.
Ashwin, who announced his IPL retirement in August, emphasized that the decision to step away is individual and was not influenced by selectors or teammates. His assertion highlights the respect he commands, even as he transitions away from competitive cricket, allowing him to take control of his career timeline.
“No one told me that you should go, no one told me that there is no place for you in the team. Actually before I took the decision 2-3 people told me not to take it but I took my decision. In fact, they wanted me to play more.”
