Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has shed light on his exclusion from the 2009 ODI series in New Zealand, attributing the decision to then-captain MS Dhoni.
Pathan revealed a conversation with then-coach Gary Kirsten, who alluded to factors beyond his control influencing the team selection. While Kirsten didn't explicitly name Dhoni, Pathan understood the captain's role in the decision-making process. He expressed no ill will towards Dhoni, acknowledging a captain's prerogative to manage the team as they see fit.
Pathan further disclosed that the team management sought a batting all-rounder, a role filled by his brother Yusuf Pathan, rather than Irfan's bowling all-rounder skillset. This preference, he believes, led to his omission from the playing XI. He reflected on the evolving dynamics of team composition, noting that today's teams often value the presence of multiple all-rounders.
““Kirsten gave me two reasons. He said, ‘There are things that are not in my hand.’ Those were Gary’s exact words. I asked whose hands it was in, but he didn’t tell me. I already knew whose hands it was in. The playing XI is decided by the captain’s choice.”
