Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially addressed the controversy surrounding Dewald Brevis's mid-season signing during IPL 2025. The statement comes after former CSK player Ravichandran Ashwin suggested irregularities in the acquisition process, implying Brevis was paid above his base price.
CSK clarified that Brevis's signing as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh was fully compliant with IPL regulations. They emphasized adherence to Clause 6.6 of the IPL Player Regulations 2025-27, which stipulates that a replacement player's fee cannot exceed that of the player they replace. Brevis was signed for ₹2.20 crore, matching Gurjapneet Singh's auction price.
Brevis joined CSK on April 18, 2025, midway through the season when the team was struggling with a 2-5 record. His explosive batting, including two half-centuries and a strike rate of 180, injected much-needed energy into the CSK lineup, contributing 225 runs in just six matches. The young South African had gone unsold in the initial IPL 2025 auction despite his evident talent.
The franchise included a screenshot of an official IPL media advisory confirming the details of Brevis's signing and compensation. This move aims to dispel any lingering doubts about the legitimacy of the acquisition and counter Ashwin's claims.
