Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed that he urged IPL teams to acquire Tim David in the 2025 auction, but his advice was disregarded. David, released by Mumbai Indians, was eventually picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a bargain price of INR 3 crore, a move Ashwin considered a steal.
Ashwin believes tall, powerful batters like David are the future of T20 cricket, especially given the current wide-line rules. He predicted their dominance if no rule changes are implemented. David's performance in IPL 2025 validated Ashwin's assessment, with the Australian batter scoring 187 runs at an impressive average of 62.33 and a strike rate of 185.15, contributing significantly to RCB's maiden IPL title.
David's strong form has continued in the ongoing T20I series against South Africa, where he has scored blistering half-centuries in the first two matches.
““I shouldn't say this but I told the decision makers of a few IPL teams to pick him before the last auction. They all said, 'No, his game has dropped off drastically '," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.”
